Film's as I see them - an introduction

So this is my new film review blog. I love films of all sorts, they make us laugh, cry, cheer with delight, sit back in awe and most of all they take us (when done correctly) out of life. They are an incredible distraction from the daily grind. I first reviewed films for friend Sean Wilkie when he launched his film review website Flicker Magazine. The first film I ever reviewed was for Flicker was Red State, such an enjoyable film. Sadly since the website has come down I've thoroughly missed reviewing films, I enjoyed going to see films I wouldn't normally pick because I had to review them. With Flicker I got to experience some things I would never normally have had the opportunity to do, the highlight of which was meeting the incredible Ken Loach after making Angel's Share.

I also love the discussion that comes after a film, the subjectivity of what makes a good and bad film is always open to interpretation. There are films that I detest that others love and vice versa, this will always be the case. However I love putting my reasoning together and I am open to discussion. I think the thing everyone can agree on is that the worst thing in the film world is a film that evokes no reaction. You don't love it or hate it, its just there.

So a big part of the reason I'm writing this blog is because I miss sharing my opinion on films and I want to get back to doing it. Another part of it is there's a lot of older films I haven't seen yet and as I see them I want to be able to share my opinion on these and get discussions on the go.

So this is a short intro to what you can expect from a review from me.

  • An honest opinion unaffected by any financial incentives
  • The view of the common man, not getting hung up on the technical side things
  • A well structured argument for whether it was good, bad or woefully indifferent
  • An out of ten rating based on the below criteria
    • Does it keep the viewers attention
    • The quality of the acting
    • The quality of the cinematography
    • Does the music fit the film?
    • Does it get it's point across?
    • Does the trailer waste it?
I hope you enjoy my cinematic rambling, reviewing films old and new.
